Subject Intent

The Applied General Business course is a hands-on course allowing you to practically develop your business skills and understanding to prepare you for a life of work. The course allows learners to delve into detail and develop their understanding on key topics such as globalisation, marketing, managing events, finance and learning about the key leadership skills needed to run a successful business.

Within the curriculum there are opportunities to interact with local businesses to develop your understanding of business concepts in a real-life setting thus bringing theoretical concepts to life. This will allow you to continually develop your employability skills ready for the workplace or further study at university. You will leave the course not only with the knowledge of how businesses work but with the understanding of how to apply these concepts to real business situations, a valuable skill set in an ever-changing world.

Course Introduction

The Business Applied General is mainly coursework-based which teaches you to become a strong, independent learner. Previous students have gone on to university, apprenticeship, and work, with some even starting their own ‘micro’ businesses whilst still on the course!

Exploring Business will help you to understand business basics, from investigating different types of businesses and the sectors they operate in, to understanding how the economy can impact on a business. The Marketing element of the course will draw on your creative talents as you learn about brands and assess promotional campaigns and their effectiveness.

You will also look at Personal and Business Finance which will give you the skills you need to manage your own money as well as an insight into business finance. The skills that you develop on the course such as presentation skills, report writing, teamworking, and problem solving will prepare you for your own success within the business world.

We work with many local enterprises to give you a real understanding of how businesses operate. We also have relevant and interesting guest speakers who visit college to work with and talk to students.

Course Modules

You will have a mixture of classroom-based lessons, group work, practical sessions, group and individual field visits and the chance for independent study.
