Core Maths – AS Level

"I really enjoy Core Maths and developing numeracy skills which I can use day to day.”

Entry Requirements

Three GCSEs at grade 4 plus a grade 5 in Maths

Subject Intent

Maths is incredibly important in our lives; we use mathematical concepts, as well as the skills we learn from doing maths problems, every day. The laws of mathematics govern everything around us, and without a good understanding of them, one can encounter significant problems in life.

Core Maths students will look at applying GCSE content to real life industries to inform decision making.

Course Introduction

Core Maths is a level 3 qualification for students who wish to develop their practical maths skills for the real world, be it in work, study or everyday life. It can be taken alongside A Levels or Level 3 Applied Generals.

What you study is not purely theoretical or abstract; it can be applied on a day-to-day basis in work, study or life and will include a financial maths element. Studying Core Maths supports your learning in other subjects, in particular engineering, science, geography, business studies, psychology and economics.

The skills developed in the study of mathematics are increasingly important in the workplace and in higher education; studying Core Maths will help you keep up these essential skills. Most students who study maths after GCSE improve their career choices and increase their earning potential. The course is equivalent to and has the same UCAS points as an AS level.
