Subject Intent

The aim of the Fashion and Clothing course is to develop students’ essential skills in all areas from sketchbook to catwalk. It is a practical, work-related course on which students expand their creativity and theoretical knowledge of fashion and clothing as well as their practical skills. The course includes design, textiles, fashion illustration, garment construction, surface decoration, garment styling, modelling on the stand, business and marketing of fashion and historical and contextual studies.

Students prepare a portfolio of practical fashion and clothing projects which will be showcased in our end of year exhibition. Students also have the chance to meet and work with professional specialists and take part in visits to museums and exhibitions

Course Introduction

The Extended Diploma in Fashion & Clothing is suitable for you if you are committed to following a career in the fashion industry. This course develops and extends the essential skills for fashion and clothing, from sketchbook to catwalk and fashion promotions.

This is a practical course in which you will produce work which investigates and develops both your creativity and theoretical knowledge of fashion and clothing. You will study design, textiles, fashion illustration, garment construction, surface decoration, garment styling, modelling on the stand, business and marketing of fashion, and historical and contextual studies as well as fashion promotions and photography.

By the end of the second year, you will produce a portfolio of practical fashion and clothing projects which you will showcase in our end of year exhibition.

Through your studies you will develop knowledge of good design principles and basic fashion skills alongside a critical understanding of the history of visual ideas and materials. You will also have the chance to meet and work with visiting professional specialists, with visits to museums and exhibitions.

Course Modules

During the course a range of different tasks will be set including practical projects and assignments and written course work. This will build up a portfolio of work evidencing the skills and techniques you have developed.

All of this then culminates in independent projects

Assessment

This assessment is 100% coursework.  You will be assessed through your practical and portfolio work and also visual and oral presentations.
