Science (Applied) – Single
“I really enjoyed the balance of the units giving me a chance to learn about different aspects of science.”
Entry Requirements
Three GCSEs at grade 4 including English Language and/or Maths plus grade 4 in Science
Subject Intent
The Extended Certificate in Applied Science is intended as an Applied General qualification for post-16 learners who want to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education and ultimately to employment, possibly in the applied science sector.
Learners taking this course develop the transferable and higher order skills which are valued by higher education providers and employers. For example, when studying Unit 3, learners will develop skills planning investigations, collecting, analysing, and presenting data, and communicating results which support some of the skills learners need to progress to higher education, employment, self-employment or training. The qualification can be taken as part of a mixed programme, leaving progression options fully open. It can also give context to subjects which would benefit from some scientific background.
Course Introduction
Applied Science allows students to explore in depth, the fascinating subjects of biology, chemistry, and physics and how these vital sciences are applied in industry.
Throughout the two-year course, you will have many opportunities to gain practical skills in areas including analysis of chemicals, enzymes, and circuits. If you enjoyed practical science at school this is a great choice. As a single Applied General, it complements many other courses including Health and Social Care and Sport and supports progression into careers requiring a science qualification.
Assessment is mainly coursework based, which gives students the opportunity to look at science topics in great depth whilst working towards a portfolio of assignments. This interesting and varied course provides sound knowledge of science which is viewed favourably by many universities.
