Aim:
Scarborough Sixth Form College welcomes applications from any committed learner for whom an appropriate study programmes is available. In counselling students regarding their choice of course, it is the College’s aim to ensure that students embark on a study programme which suits their interests, prior achievement, progression aims and ability to succeed.
1. Entry Requirements and Conditions on admission
• Applicants must be suitably qualified by meeting our entry requirements
• The College has the right to turn down an application if capacity no longer exists (i.e. if the College or a course is declared “full”).
• Late applications are usually acceptable during the first few weeks of the academic year provided that the College is satisfied that the student has good prospects of success, particularly when students are transferring from other institutions.
• Both general and course-specific entry requirements are published on the College website, in the College prospectus and on individual course descriptions.
• In addition to the entry requirements, students’ GCSE profile and average score are also considered when making enrolment decisions.
• Where a student is enrolled on a full-time basis then they must undertake a programme of study of sufficient size and scope, which will be set out in the learning agreement.
• If a student does not yet have a grade 4 in GCSE English Language or Mathematics, it is a requirement that they have that qualification or Functional Skills Literacy or Numeracy as part of their programme of study.
• Some students will be admitted subject to certain conditions, for example, making satisfactory progress.
• Applicants who do not possess UK qualifications will be required to sit our internal Maths and English entrance tests to determine suitability for courses and the College.
• Applicants who have not sat formal qualifications will be required to sit our internal Maths and English entrance tests to determine suitability for courses and the College.
2. Consultation, Advice and Guidance as part of admission to the College
Potential students receive advice and guidance from admissions and guidance staff at various points throughout Year 11 and all applicants receive an individual consultation in the spring or summer term, followed by an enrolment interview after GCSE results in August.
3. Decisions about admission to the College
Decisions about admission to the College and about admission on to any specific course are ultimately made by an enrolling member of staff (a teacher or Guidance Support Tutor) on behalf of the College, taking into account the GCSE results, wishes and interests of the student, but also based on reasonable prospect of success and available places.
4. Appeals against enrolment decisions
Any applicant wishing to appeal against the College’s decision to refuse them a place should do so in writing to the Principal within five working days of their enrolment interview.
Appeals can be made:
- Where there is evidence of a failure to implement the Admissions Policy.
- Where there is additional information directly relevant to the application, which for good reason was not available at the time of interview.
- Where there appears to have been an administrative error.
- If an applicant presents evidence that there has been discrimination, prejudice or bias shown by the representatives of the College.
The Principal or a designated deputy will review the appeal and normally respond in writing within five working days of the appeal (this time frame may be extended if appropriate).
The potential outcomes of an appeal are:
- The appeal is upheld, and the student will be invited back to complete their enrolment.
- The appeal is rejected and IAG will be offered to support the student into an appropriate next step.
5. Equality and Diversity
This policy has been reviewed to assure the promotion of equality on grounds of gender, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, race, religion or belief, disability, age, marriage and civil partnership, and pregnancy and maternity.
The review deemed it to be compliant with the College’s Single Equality Scheme
