Aim:

The College is committed to providing guidance to all students prior to enrolment, on entry to College, during a student’s progress through College and in relation to progression from College.

Scarborough Sixth Form College is a successful, supportive and friendly college providing high quality education and enabling success for students, staff and the community.

1. Introduction

The College is committed to providing guidance to all students prior to enrolment, on entry to College, during a student’s progress through College and in relation to progression from College.

  • Careers advice and guidance will:
  • Be informative, clear and impartial.
  • Be readily available to all students as and when necessary.
  • Differentiate to meet the needs of the individual, be progressive and build on prior experience.
  • Enable the student to acquire the skills and knowledge they need to make informed choices and decisions about the future.
  • Give maximum opportunity for realistic progression.
  • Help students appreciate and understand the relevance of their studies to career and other opportunities.

2. Purpose

A comprehensive and varied careers programme (Gatsby 1)

Purpose: To provide a clear outline about the careers service and annual activities accessible by students, parents, staff, and externals via the college website.

Individual guidance prior to entry to College (Gatsby 3, 8)

Purpose: To ensure students choose the right career pathway and the right combination of subjects to meet individual needs.

Staff Responsible: Vice Principal

Serviced by: Admissions, Careers, Teaching staff, Guidance Support Tutors during school events, open events, student consultations, and enrolment.

Personal guidance whilst at College (Gatsby 3, 8)

Purpose: To enable students to plan their career/progression after college and give specific guidance on available pathways.

Staff Responsible: Careers Manager

Serviced by: Careers Manager & Careers Adviser

Work Experience, including volunteering and placements (Gatsby 5, 6)

Purpose: To help students gain insight into the world of work and aid decision-making about future careers. Includes VIP Week for those not on courses with embedded work placements.

Careers & HE Events/Visits (Gatsby 2, 4, 7)

Purpose: To increase student awareness of HE, employment, and apprenticeship opportunities; broaden horizons and inspire future thinking.

Talks from external speakers (Gatsby 2, 4, 5, 7)

Purpose: Information sessions on careers and progression, including HE, employment, apprenticeships, and gap years. Involves links with NYBEP, Inspiring Futures, and Inspiring Choices.

Careers Resources (Gatsby 2, 8)

Purpose: To allow students to access information when needed. Includes printed materials and extensive online resources.

Specialist Careers Advice (Gatsby 3, 8)

Purpose: To provide specific advice for progression routes (e.g., Aspire enrichment for competitive university applicants, apprenticeship prep, EHCP student guidance).

Employability preparation (Gatsby 3)

Purpose: To offer mock interviews, CV guidance, job search support, discussions on part-time work, work experience, and career aims.

Prep Programme (Gatsby 3, 8)

Purpose: To enable students to acquire skills and knowledge for informed decisions about the future, covering HE, employment, apprenticeships, UCAS, and employability.

Reviews & contact with Guidance Support Tutors (Gatsby 3, 8)

Purpose: Regular contact to monitor student progress and address concerns. Referrals to Careers team and specialist services when needed.

3. College Commitment

The College is committed to:

• Train and develop staff involved in the delivery of careers advice and guidance.

• Equality & Diversity

• Involving parents where appropriate and responding to their requests.

• Helping students with careers advice and guidance immediately after they have left college.

• Working in partnership with other providers and organisations to deliver a rounded and unbiased careers programme.

Careers is treated as a separate area in all respects and as such receives an annual budget for the development of the resources.

The Careers provision is reviewed annually and takes into account:

  • The views of students (via college student survey and event feedback)
  • Student destination information
  • The views of stakeholders such as parents and employers (via event feedback)
  • The usage of the service

4. Staffing Structure

Vice Principal / Strategic Careers Leader - Overall responsibility for Careers and strategic planning.

Careers Manager / Careers Adviser / Operational Careers Leader - Responsibility for the planning & delivery of the careers programme. Personal guidance interviews. Oversee the enrichment programme.

Careers & Work Placement Officer - Planning and organisation of work experience. Careers event planning & coordination.

Employer Engagement & Placement Officer - Maintain and build on employer links and placement opportunities. Organise VIP week. (Volunteering and Independent Placement Week)

Guidance Support Tutors - Regular support with progression through weekly Prep sessions and one-to-one reviews.
