Enrichment

At Scarborough Sixth Form College we are committed to raising the ambition, skills and confidence of our students. During your time with us we want you to experience a wide range of opportunities. We have a varied and exciting enrichment programme to enhance your university application, raise your employability profile and develop your social skills.

You will choose your enrichment during your enrolment interview. The enrichment offer evolves in response to student interests and suggestions. Below are the options currently on offer:

Absolute Beginners French

Learn a foreign language and raise their cultural awareness about France. In Absolute Beginners’ French we will cover things such as greetings, colours, numbers, time, food, asking simple questions etc. We will not be learning complex grammar. Only for students with very little or no prior knowledge of the language.

Aspire

Aspire supports students who hope to apply to competitive universities and degree apprenticeships. We are linked with universities, including Oxbridge, and the Oxbridge trip is the final activity on the Aspire programme.

Aspiring Economists

Unlock the world of economics with our Aspiring Economists Enrichment Programme, crafted for sixth form students passionate about understanding the forces shaping our world. Whether you are studying economics or simply have an interest, this programme offers two engaging courses: Fundamentals of Microeconomics by Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and Macroeconomics - The Basics by Doane University. Each course spans 8 weeks and provides an opportunity to earn certificates of completion. Utilize UniFrog and MOOC platforms to enhance your learning experience, with comprehensive support and facilitation throughout. Join us to gain valuable insights, develop critical thinking skills, and prepare for further studies or a career in economics.

Aspiring Medics

We will cover the following: What’s it like to be a Doctor? Working in the NHS, Other job roles in a hospital, What do I need to be doing in year 12 including volunteering, Being successful in the UCAT, Medical Issues and Ethics for wider reading, Pathways to Medicine, Visiting speakers including Students, Hospital Doctors and GPs, Writing a good personal statement, Mock Interviews. It is also be suitable for those interested in dentistry and possibly veterinary science.

Aspiring Psychologists

Badminton

Recreational Badminton for anyone - turn up and play

3 badminton courts on a Tuesday lunchtime open to anyone from both year groups. Turn up and play. No PE kit needed but clean dry trainers. Equipment is provided. 12.15-12.50pm.

Ballet

Join our Ballet Enrichment Programme, designed to enhance your skills and deepen your appreciation for this elegant art form. Whether you're an experienced dancer or a curious beginner, our sessions offer a supportive environment to explore classical ballet techniques, improve your flexibility, and develop your artistry. You'll engage in a variety of exercises and choreography that cater to all levels. Experience the grace and discipline of ballet while building confidence and fostering creativity.

Bar Mock Trial Competition

The Bar Mock Trial Competition helps young people understand how the law touches every aspect of their lives, gaining an insight into how the legal justice system works.

It provides an opportunity for students across the college (beyond Law) to take part in the preparations of a mock court trial, by being assigned key roles of those associated within the Criminal Justice and System, whether these be in either the Magistrates' Court or Crown Court, and to participate in a regional competition too.

Basketball Academy

You will receive specialist coaching, developmental advice and participate in an extensive fixture programme. We have strong links with local sports clubs giving you access to their facilities and pathways into senior teams. We offer advice on combining your university study programme with your performance pathway in the UK and abroad.

Blender 3D

3D Modelling and Design using Blender 3D. An introduction with practical application for using this extremely powerful, creative and professional standard 3D design package. We will start at the very beginning by getting to grips with the user interface and navigating the 3D environment. We will then work systematically through the various modelling techniques and features of Blender with the final aim of creating either 'Toon' based or Photorealistc 3D renders. It will be fun as we take a comfortable and easy to follow approach.

Build Your Own Blog

The intention is for students to build a website (using Wix) to start a blog of their own choice. This will be broken down into small steps. Canva will be used to help them create/design graphics. The students will make a logo, write posts, vote on each other's ideas and essentially end the year with a fully formed blog website (no coding needed - using a website creator). This can be a portfolio website, reviews - books, film, TV, political, gaming, photography or any of their interests. Intra competitions will take place, taking inspiration from the Vuelio Blog Awards and their winners.

Chemistry Olympiad

Designed to challenge and inspire, the UK Chemistry Olympiad (UKChO) is a unique opportunity for students to push themselves further and excel in the chemistry field. Budding chemists will develop critical problem-solving skills, learn to think more creatively and get a chance to test their knowledge in new, real-world situations. They could even find themselves representing the UK at the prestigious International Chemistry Olympiad.

Cambridge Chemistry Challenge

The Cambridge Chemistry Challenge L6 is an exciting and rigorous competition designed to challenge and inspire the brightest young minds in chemistry.

Open to students in L6, this prestigious contest tests your problem-solving skills, creativity, and passion for chemistry. Whether you're looking to deepen your understanding of complex topics or stand out on your university application, the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge provides an exceptional platform to showcase your abilities and engage with cutting-edge scientific concepts. Take the challenge, push the boundaries of your knowledge, and see how far your chemistry skills can take you!

College Magazine

Work as part of a team to produce the college magazine. In the first week, you will form an editorial team and decide the direction you want to take the college magazine. You will each take on an editorial role and it will be your job to source articles and features and to decide layout and size of print run. Some of you may want to contribute your own writing, some of you may prefer to work on the technical side of things. We will be working towards the publication of a magazine in March but if we work well together and are highly motivated there is no reason why we can’t get something out at Christmas too. We will meet each week to discuss progress and set targets. You should gain a lot of valuable experience from this enrichment as it requires close collaboration and team work and there are opportunities for you to develop your own writing skills.

College Production

A chance to be involved in a whole college production. Previous productions include "Les Miserables", "Everybody's Talking About Jamie" and "The Addams Family". You can audition for a main part or the chorus. There are lots of opportunities for performance in a range of different sized roles. Alternatively you could take on a role such as set design and building, sound and lighting, costume hair & make-up. You will need to commit to a rehearsal schedule which starts out as two rehearsals a week and more as the production gets close.

Competitive Esports

Develop Team building skills and engage in a competitive industry to improve your skills in gaming.

The eSports Enrichment Project is a weekly opportunity for college students to work together as a team and develop their expertise in gaming across multiple game titles. The goal of the project is to develop teamwork and communication skills, as well as to learn about the latest gaming trends and technologies.

Students will participate in team-building exercises, learn about different gaming strategies, and practice playing games together. The goal is to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in competitive gaming. One of the end goals of the project is to compete with other colleges and take part in national tournaments. With the help of staff, students will learn how to analyse their game play, identify areas for improvement, and develop their competitive gaming skills. The Esports Enrichment Project is a great opportunity for students who are passionate about gaming to develop their skills and knowledge. It is also a great way to meet other students who share the same interests and build lasting friendships.

Coursea Psychology Courses

Further knowledge of up to date psychology related topics and research such as positive psychology. You don’t have to be a psychology student to do the courses. It will help students expand their knowledge and give them useful skills in preparation for University and employment. Certificates are given when course is completed.

Creative Crochet

A chance to learn crochet from scratch, or to branch out into new and creative ways of using this fun and versatile craft.

Suitable for complete beginners, those with some knowledge looking for ideas, or experienced crocheters ready to discover exciting new ways to use those skills. You will work at your own pace, with support and guidance from the tutor in a relaxed workshop environment, with the option to contribute to a final, community project by the end of the course.

Cricket Academy

Indoor cricket and outdoor cricket training - The first term will be looking at indoor cricket practice, preparing for the indoor cricket matches. After Christmas the cricket nets will be used and the introduction of hard cricket balls will take place.

Debating Society

Debating society is for those who wish to listen, understand and respond to other students’ arguments.

The debating society will be student led. We will discuss topics chosen by students and all members will have a chance to lead debates or to simply listen to others. Your level of involvement will be determined by you. You will also have the opportunity to take part in all College events and debating competitions. This will be a safe space to develop and respect opinions.

Design Build Challenge

This enrichment will give you the opportunity to design and build the body and some electronics for our Radio Controlled 4x4 cars, cumulating in an in-house competition by the end of the year.

We will look at using software sure as AutoCAD, Fusion360 and Eagle. You will be able to search a range of suitable materials for the construction of the body. The electronics element of this project will be for ancillaries to the RC car, e.g. making headlights automatically come on at a set light level, tilt sensors, working indicators etc .

Driving Theory

Preparation for the driving theory test. Students learn the Highway Code and practice the hazard perception and multiple choice tests. Term one reserved for year 13 only. Term two is for both year groups.

Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award

If you are looking for an adventure, an opportunity to make new friends and give your CV a massive boost the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award could well be for you. The Gold Award has run at the college for over 40 years and for many students the expedition is the highlight of their time at S6F. Planning and executing a four day adventure in the Lake District with a group of six others, camping on a night and making memories that will last a lifetime. There are other elements to the award too that many students find their existing activities count towards. We support students even after leaving S6F to complete the award and receive their certificate at St James’ Palace which impresses universities and employers alike.

Entreprenuership & Starting a Business

An enrichment for students who already have a business idea or who have a strong desire to start their own business in the future.

Topics covered include: - Developing your Business Idea - How to create a ‘killer‘ Business Plan - Methods for raising finance - Market Research & Marketing Students will learn by building their own Business Plan and will finish by presenting their idea to a ‘Dragons Den’ style panel of judges, with Awards for the best new business ideas!

Epic Quests and Heroes: Dungeons & Dragons Enrichment

Embark on a journey of imagination, strategy, and storytelling with our Dungeons & Dragons enrichment program! Designed for all students, this course offers an immersive experience into the world of tabletop role-playing games. Develop critical thinking, teamwork, and creative problem-solving skills as you create your own characters, navigate intricate plots, and overcome challenges in a collaborative fantasy setting. Whether you're a seasoned adventurer or new to the realms of D&D, join us to explore new worlds, forge epic tales, and discover the hero within. Unleash your creativity and let the adventure begin!

Girls session for those looking for some gentle exercise.

Beginners session for those looking to avoid peak times in the gym. Gentle work out at your own pace. No prior experience needed.

Green Shoots Gardening Club

Learn how to plan, design and build a garden from scratch in the College grounds. This includes our allotment area planned for seasonable, fresh edible delights such as salads, vegetables, herbs and fruit. Additionally, we are creating the Art Garden where we are making a sensory garden to delight with colour, scent and texture. Practical gardening skills learnt include testing the soil and site, making our own compost, the rules of digging (or no digging!), taking cuttings, weed and pest management, gardening for wildlife as well as sowing, growing and harvesting our crops. We also have regular houseplant sales, have done litter picks, hold craftworking sessions and build structures such as raised beds, our shed, a pond and bug hotels and have planted fruit trees and hedges! We even grow seasonal flowers for reception. Sensory gardens are thought to be calming with therapeutic benefits and contact with the soil is beneficial to mental and physical wellbeing. Gardening in itself is good exercise, gets you out in the fresh air and is a social, friendly and above all a fun experience. Justice Course with Harvard University

Students will learn about political philosophy, social and criminal justice and how to better articulate and evaluate philosophical arguments. They can get a certificate from Harvard University at the end if they want (for a fee).

Knitting for the Community

Knitters of all levels are welcome to come and support their community.

Whether you are a complete beginner or have lots of experience, come and build on your skills and help those in need. From knitting hats for the homeless during the winter to taking part in the Innocent Big Knit in support of AgeUK or donating blankets to local neonatal units, there are plenty of opportunities to make a difference in your community.

Open University History Enrichment

An opportunity to explore some topics in more depth. Each term students will select a free online course and at the end of the term they share their findings with the group. Certificates will be obtained for these courses.

Problem Solving Maths Challenges

An opportunity to tackle interesting maths problems and prepare for the UKMT Maths Challenge and University Maths entrance exams.

Python & PHP introductory coding

Learn Python and PHP, the most preferred programming languages for backend web app development.

We will cover algorithm writing, searching and sorting algorithms and database design work, predominantly using Python. You needn’t have any previous coding experience, just interest and enthusiasm. We will also cover web design.

Researching your family tree

Find out about your ancestors and create a family tree.

This course is aimed at beginners getting started in researching their family tree. We will use a web-based research site to store our information and find out more about our families. By the end of the 12 weeks you should have the start of a family tree and the skills to continue researching further.

Rock Band

An opportunity to make some noise, learn a few tunes and play in a band. The sessions work towards a lunchtime gig in the hub, where you get to showcase your inner rockstar! Some experience/basic skills on your instrument/voice would be advantageous, but not necessary!

Silver Arts Award

Where artistic challenge meets arts leadership!

Silver Arts Award gives young people the chance to take on an artistic challenge and a leadership role too. As well as being about creativity, it's about becoming a reviewer, researcher and project manager. Participants build a broad range of transferable skills as they complete their portfolio and gain a Level 2 qualification.

Sports Leaders

Sports Leaders UK qualifications are offered at levels 2 & 3 and are all 1 year courses.

The commitment is one hour per week in Year 12 and three hours in Year 13. The Sports Leaders qualification gives you 16 UCAS points once completed. You will develop personal skills, improve your coaching and leadership and work with range of people in the community.

Sunderland Future Journalism Stars

Welcome, all future journalism stars! The University of Sunderland are looking for students to take part in an exciting opportunity to become a future journalist.

Within this competition for Sunderland University, you will have the opportunity to work on websites and creating content that you are passionate about. This is suited to students that have an interest in journalism but are also interested in the media and design. Past winners have designed websites, logos, written content and photography. There may even be some exciting prizes on offer!

The Logic League

A time to learn or develop your skills in board games or logic puzzles. You can choose from a range of individual or group activities such as simple or cryptic crosswords, Murdle, sudoku, logic puzzles to develop deductive and reasoning skills or interactive RPGs such as D&D, Risk, War Hammer or you can simply unwind and relax with jigsaws. This is a chance to meet new people or join with friends to develop some new skills and enter competitions. We have competitions such as time trials for individual or team events using the format of the UK Puzzle Association and we can plan a visit to the Leeds Gaming Festival.
